La Ticla

la ticla set

Shots from my second trip to La Ticla, a small little surf town in Michoacan, MX.

We left on a Friday afternoon, for the 5+ hours drive south. About two hours south of Vallarta, the four boards I had strapped to the roof of my Xterra ripped off the roof, breaking the roof racks and ripping the racks off the roof as well. I was doing 80mph. oops. So much for Xterra being a car for rugged adventures, the racks were made of plastic. After spending a half-hour driving back to get cellphone service, we called Petey, Marco and George to ensure they brought substitute boards for us (from guadalajara) and we were back on our way.

There was no major swell or anything, this trip, but Saturday morning we awoke to solid head high sets. We all had fun and caught some seriously nice left-handers and an occasional right. This was Marcia’s first time camping, which wasn’t so brute with the addition of the bathrooms, showers and ramadas at the camp we stayed in, referred to by the locals as La Ticla Hills (as in Beverly).

Serious props to Marcos for the use of his boards, without him, I woulda turned back without thinking. Marcos shapes boards under the name “ATL” and he’s currently shaping me a 6′0″ ultra-light shortboard and I’m working on some graphics for it, so we’ll see how that turns out in the next few weeks. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get in to his shaping bay to take photos.
